چکیده

Racemic, (−)-, and (+)-gossypol were evaluated over a concentration range of 0 to 400 μg per mL for effects on several Aspergillus flavus growth parameters. In the concentration range tested, racemic gossypol did not stimulate conidial germination on water agar alone. In a germination stimulatory environment (potato dextrose medium), racemic gossypol concentrations of ≥ 200 μg per mL decreased the number of germinated conidia, germ tube length and conidiophore development, and increased frequency of hyphal branching. (−)-Gossypol elicited the same fungal responses as racemic gossypol, but at lower concentrations (≥ 50 μg/mL). (+)-Gossypol was less active than racemic gossypol. Activity differences exhibited by the different enantiomers of gossypol were quantitative in nature and activity of racemic gossypol equaled the sum of activities of the individual optical isomers. The observed inhibitory effects on A. flavus development were temporal, and were partially reversed with longer incubation. Thus, A. flavus appeared to adapt to the presence of gossypol to overcome its inhibitory growth effects.

Growth Inhibition of Aspergillus flavus Isolated from Pistachio by Secondary Metabolites

Pistachio nut is a strategic product throughout the world, especially in Iran. There are some problems that reduce production and export of pistachios, for example, postharvest fungi, especially Aspergillus spp., that lead to production of mycotoxins. Nowadays the use of chemical and synthetic antifungals is discouraged and reduced because of health risks to mankind and nature. In present study...

Visualizing nuclear migration during conidiophore development in Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus oryzae: multinucleation of conidia occurs through direct migration of plural nuclei from phialides and confers greater viability and early germination in Aspergillus oryzae.

Nuclear migration is indispensable for normal growth, differentiation, and development, and has been studied in several fungi including Aspergillus nidulans and Neurospora crassa. To better characterize nuclear movement and its consequences during conidiophore development, conidiation, and conidial germination, we performed confocal microscopy and time-lapse imaging on A. nidulans and Aspergill...

Characterization of the Aspergillus parasiticus delta12-desaturase gene: a role for lipid metabolism in the Aspergillus-seed interaction.

In the mycotoxigenic oilseed pathogens Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus and the model filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, unsaturated fatty acids and their derivatives act as important developmental signals that affect asexual conidiospore, sexual ascospore and/or sclerotial development. To dissect the relationship between lipid metabolism and fungal development, an A. parasi...

Biocontrol Activity of Volatile-Producing Bacillus megaterium and Pseudomonas protegens against Aspergillus flavus and Aflatoxin Production on Stored Rice Grains

In our previous study, three bacterial strains, Bacillus megaterium KU143, Microbacterium testaceum KU313, and Pseudomonas protegens AS15, were selected as effective biocontrol agents against Aspergillus flavus on stored rice grains. In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of the volatiles produced by the strains on A. flavus growth and aflatoxin production on stored rice grains. The...

A maize trypsin inhibitor (ZmTIp) with limited activity against Aspergillus flavus.

Infection of maize both pre- and postharvest by Aspergillus flavus is a severe agricultural problem in the southern United States. Aflatoxins are secondary metabolites produced by A. flavus and are carcinogenic to humans and animals upon ingestion. Extensive research has been conducted to identify sources of resistance to A. flavus in maize. Some maize genotypes exhibit greater resistance to A....
